The Dreaded Phone Call

At 10:45, the phone rang. The caller ID said the name of Emily’s school. I felt my voice catch in my throat as I answered the phone. It was the school administrator telling me I need to come pick Emily up. Our normally very happy student was simply not herself. She was complaining of a sore throat and she didn’t want to play at recess. She’s been acting like this Saturday. Her temperature had gotten up to 99.5, but generally has been below normal. This morning it was normal, so off she went to school.

When I got her home, her temperature was 100.5. So, I took her to the doctor. Hopefully we can knock this out with an antibiotic. A quick yet thorough examination revealed that she has strep throat and tons of wax in her ears. They cleaned out her ears and were relieved to find no infection. She is allergic to penicillin, so she is taking Zythromax for the rest of the week. Poor kid. This is her first case of strep. Hopefully we can keep it away from the boys! Assuming her temperature is normal, she’ll be back at school on Wednesday.

  1. I’m surprised it took so long for her to really come down with something. School’s are petri dishes for this sort of thing. It sure is hard on a parent to see their child go through this stuff and not be able to flip a switch and make it all better.
